The BBC micro:bit is an open-source, ARM-based embedded board built for computer education — programmable in MicroPython and easy to wire up to sensors for touch, sound, heat, and proximity. Here's a working prototype I built: a touchless doorbell that rings when a hand gets close, no contact needed.
Built on a Raspberry Pi Model B+ (512MB RAM), paired with a Pi display unit, a SIM800 GSM/GPRS module, and a 3.7V battery — WiFi-enabled, with calling and SMS coded in Python. Since it's Pi-based under the hood, it also doubles as a full internet-connected compute module. Still a work in progress.
